The wounded man and his family and friends seek to navigate the bureaucratic maze yet never get anywhere except in the queue. A bullet fired by a soldier is lodged in his body, and no doctor can remove it for a permit is needed in order to move government property. ![]() In true absurdist fashion, the main character is wounded during a protest. As the book progresses, the gate stays closed, the queue grows and grows. An ever-increasing flow of bureaucratic requirements flows out of this gate, resulting in people queuing up to submit applications and permits. In a pseudo-Cairo a massive gate keeps the people separated from whomever seems to rule. In The Queue Basma Abdel Aziz provides a refreshing and powerful narrative that forces a re-examination of mainstream apocalypse. ![]() Western imagination appears to court two streams of dystopia young blonde teenager in a nuclear wasteland, and middle-aged man against some version of technocratic authoritarianism. ![]()
