![]() ![]() I have been struggling with mental health illness for some time, and it would be wrong to try and continue when I can no longer give the fans and the series the full commitment and energy it deserves. After 10 years of working with Bloomsbury, it is with great sadness that I have to step down from illustrating Harry Potter. I am extremely lucky to have been involved in a franchise that has meant so much to so many people across the world. Waiting.Ībdel Aziz delivers a masterful critique of the surveillance state. The wounded man and his family and friends seek to navigate the bureaucratic maze yet never get anywhere except in the queue. A bullet fired by a soldier is lodged in his body, and no doctor can remove it for a permit is needed in order to move government property. ![]() In true absurdist fashion, the main character is wounded during a protest. As the book progresses, the gate stays closed, the queue grows and grows. An ever-increasing flow of bureaucratic requirements flows out of this gate, resulting in people queuing up to submit applications and permits. In a pseudo-Cairo a massive gate keeps the people separated from whomever seems to rule. In The Queue Basma Abdel Aziz provides a refreshing and powerful narrative that forces a re-examination of mainstream apocalypse. ![]() Western imagination appears to court two streams of dystopia young blonde teenager in a nuclear wasteland, and middle-aged man against some version of technocratic authoritarianism. ![]() 6/12/2023 0 Comments Flashdogs by Mark A. King![]() ![]() I don’t know what I’ll do later when the house is emptied and I am alone. Is it God’s divine plan that all my heartaches come in this season, my emotions at odds with the setting? The sun is warm when it breaks through the leaves and there’s a gentle buzz of insects in the spring air. They’re back at the house, but this last walk is for us alone. And why wouldn’t they when you poured your love into them as if they were our own? The nieces and the nephews and their respective families. I held your hands and we cried together for what would never be. I found you here, of course, your salty tears falling into the river – sending your story to the oceans for the whales to lament. I told you I loved you, that it didn’t matter, but you walked out alone regardless – the only other time you left me. I remember the spring we found out we would remain a couple only – the bitter irony that in the season of new life we’d be unable to make any.
